We’re officially a month into the NFL season. September superstars are a thing we know of, just look at the 2023 Miami Dolphins. That said, there are certainly some real candidates who have a shot.
Brock Purdy
Stats: 1,007 passing yards, 70% completion, 12 total touchdowns, 1 interception
Brock is the first of two QBs on this list who, if you tell me they are “mid,” I’m just going to assume you don’t know football. If the season ended today, the Niners would be second all-time in points per drive with 3.3. He’s leading the league in EPA per dropback (0.53) and hasn’t taken a sack all season. He’s getting the ball out quick, with precision, and looking like the early runaway favorite in my eyes.
Josh Allen
Stats: 1,039 passing yards, 66% completion, 13 total touchdowns, 3 interceptions
Josh is commanding the NFL’s top offense, averaging 31.8 PPG. He’s taking what the defense gives him every game, whether it’s slinging it down the field or keeping it with his legs. On top of that, he’s had to win in shootouts, with a defense allowing 26.8 PPG. To no one’s surprise, it’ll once again rest on his shoulders if the Bills want to get over the hump.
Kenneth Walker
Stats: 99 touches, 621 yards, 6 total touchdowns
A large part of the Chiefs’ 4-0 start is K9. He has 537 rushing yards, the most through 4 games since Arian Foster in 2010. He also has +212 rushing yards over expected (RYOE), the most in football by 100 yards. The personified wrecking ball will continue to mow his way through the AFC. Eric Dickerson’s single-season record is 2,105 yards, something to keep in mind as we go into Q2 of the season.
Dak Prescott
Stats: 1,065 passing yards, 70% completion, 8 total touchdowns, 1 interception
Dak is playing the game on Heisman difficulty. The Cowboys have the 8th least time to throw, the 30th ranked defense, and the fewest possessions on offense this season. However, despite the least time with the ball, they’re averaging 30.5 PPG and 3.39 points per drive, and put up 34 points against the vaunted Texans defense. If the season ended today, that would be the best points per drive of all time. Furthermore, his pass EPA is +40.2, second to Purdy. The Cowboys would be a bottom 5 team in the league without Dak, so the ability to will a horrific defense to 2-2 locks him into my early top 4.
